Can You Wear a Luxury Watch in a Chicago Winter?
Yes, with a few habits. How cold, road salt, wet cuffs and gloves affect a mechanical watch in a Chicago winter, and which bracelet or strap to wear.

Yes, you can wear a luxury watch in a Chicago winter. Cold on the wrist is rarely the problem, because the watch sits against your skin under a sleeve. The real risks are road salt in the bracelet, wet leather and leaving the watch somewhere freezing. A steel bracelet or rubber strap and a quick rinse handle most of it.
The timing matters now. The National Weather Service’s Chicago office lists October 19 as the normal first freeze at O’Hare and October 13 at Rockford, based on 1991 to 2020 data. Last year O’Hare’s first freeze came later, on November 9. Either way, the season for salt, slush and heavy coats is a few weeks out, which makes October a sensible time to choose what you will wear through it.
Does cold weather affect an automatic watch?
Only when the watch itself gets cold. OMEGA’s care page tells owners to avoid temperatures below 0°C (32°F) or above 60°C (140°F), and “extreme temperature changes.” That limit is about the watch, not the weather report. Under a cuff and a coat sleeve, the case sits against your skin, so it stays much closer to body temperature than to the air, even on a January morning in the Loop.
The trouble starts when the watch comes off. These are the habits to drop for the winter:
- Leaving a watch in the glovebox or a cup holder overnight in an unheated car or garage.
- Setting a watch from a cold car straight onto a radiator or heating vent to warm up.
- Taking a watch that has been outside off-wrist for hours into a hot shower or a sauna.
If a watch suddenly runs very fast or slow, stops, or shows moisture under the crystal, take it to a qualified service center rather than waiting for spring.
Does road salt damage a watch bracelet?
It can, mostly by building up where you can’t see it. The Illinois Department of Transportation’s winter operations page reports over 357,500 tons of salt used on its roads in fiscal year 2026, through April, across about 45,000 lane miles. The brine and grit end up on your hands, your cuffs and your watch.
Salt crystals and sand settle between bracelet links, around the clasp and under the bezel. Left there, they grind against the finish every time the bracelet flexes, and you won’t notice it day to day.
OMEGA’s care page gives the routine that works here too. It says to clean “metal bracelets and all water-resistant cases” with a toothbrush, soapy tap water and a soft cloth to dry. In its advice on swimming in the sea, it says to “always rinse your watch with warm tap water afterwards.” Road slush isn’t seawater, but salt is the common problem. Before any of it, make sure the crown is screwed all the way in. OMEGA says to “screw it in carefully to ensure that no water enters the mechanism.”
Only do this with a watch that is water resistant and has its crown closed. A dress watch on a leather strap gets a dry cloth, nothing more.
Is a leather strap a bad idea in winter?
For daily wear in Chicago, mostly yes. OMEGA’s care page says to keep leather straps away from “water and dampness to prevent discoloration and deformation.” Winter brings plenty of both: snow on a sleeve, a wet coat cuff that sits on the strap all morning, a damp glove pulled on and off over it.
A good compromise is a watch that changes straps easily. The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Moon Phase Retrograde Date 4000V is one example. Its listing shows a stainless steel 41mm case that comes with a rubber strap and a leather strap besides the steel bracelet, plus a folding clasp. That makes it one watch for three seasons: bracelet or rubber from November to March, leather when the sidewalks are dry.

Here is how the three usually compare through a Chicago winter:
| Option | Salt and slush | Wet sleeves | Winter care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel bracelet | Holds grit between links | Fine | Rinse and brush with soapy water, crown screwed in |
| Rubber strap | Wipes clean | Fine | Rinse, dry the buckle |
| Leather strap | Can discolor | Can deform | Keep it for dry days |

What should you look for in a watch you’ll wear all winter?
Pick the watch for the season you’ll actually wear it in. Three things matter most in a Chicago winter.
A bracelet or rubber strap you can wash. Covered above. If the watch you love only comes on leather, plan for a second strap.
A screw-down crown and real water resistance. You want to rinse salt off without thinking twice. OMEGA’s page adds that water resistance can’t be counted on forever and recommends a water resistance check once a year, with a complete service every 5 to 8 years depending on use. For a pre-owned watch, ask when it was last serviced and whether it comes with records.
A case that fits under a cuff. A thick case catches on a shirt cuff, a coat sleeve and a glove’s opening many times a day. Each catch is a chance for a knock against a door frame or a car door. Compare case thickness on the maker’s specifications before you choose, and if you can, try the watch under the coat you wear most.

When you shop pre-owned for winter wear, look closely at the parts salt and wear reach first: between the bracelet links, the clasp, the case flanks and the crown. Good Times Luxury carefully checks every watch before it is listed, and is always happy to send close-up photos or videos of a specific piece on request. Ask for the clasp and the inside of the bracelet if those matter to you. You can browse pre-owned watches in the collection and compare listings by condition and included items.
Can you ship a luxury watch in winter?
Yes. Winter mostly changes the planning, not the method. Good Times Luxury ships insured overnight, and most listings go signature required by UPS Next Day Air, so someone has to be there to sign. That also means the package doesn’t sit on a frozen porch. Choose an address where you’ll be present on the delivery day, such as an office during the work week. The shipping policy has the full terms.
If the watch is a holiday gift, December weather and bank holidays both add days. The post on how early to order a luxury watch for Christmas counts the dates backward from December 24.
Questions buyers ask
Can a mechanical watch freeze on your wrist?
It’s unlikely in normal wear, because under a cuff and a coat sleeve the case sits against your skin, so it stays much closer to body temperature than to the air. OMEGA’s care page lists 0°C (32°F) as the low limit, and that matters for a watch left off-wrist in a cold car or garage.
How do you clean road salt off a watch bracelet?
Screw the crown in, then brush the bracelet and case with soapy tap water and a soft toothbrush, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth. OMEGA’s care page gives this routine for metal bracelets and water-resistant cases.
Should you switch from a leather strap to a bracelet in winter?
For daily wear in salty, wet weather, a steel bracelet or rubber strap is the safer choice. OMEGA advises keeping leather straps away from water and dampness, which cause discoloration and deformation.
When does winter weather start in the Chicago area?
The National Weather Service lists October 19 as the normal first freeze at O’Hare and October 13 at Rockford, based on 1991 to 2020 data. In 2025, O’Hare’s first freeze came on November 9.
