The Patek Philippe Nautilus, especially the discontinued ref. 5711, and the Aquanaut (refs. 5167 and 5164) define the high-end steel sports watch. Both hit extreme peaks during the hype years, then corrected. After that volatile stretch, the Patek market has settled, and prices now reflect real collector demand more than speculation.

The short version

  • The Patek market has stabilized, still well above pre-2020 levels.
  • The Nautilus remains the most recognized and easiest to resell.
  • The Aquanaut starts lower, which leaves it more room to grow in percentage terms.
  • Discontinued references like the 5711 depend entirely on collector scarcity, which keeps their premiums high.

What drives the Patek market

Low production and deep collector confidence in the brand define the market.

Nautilus: the benchmark

The steel Nautilus sets the standard for how easily a luxury watch resells. The discontinued 5711 and its successor, the 5811, keep demand at the top of the market. It is instantly recognizable, carries the highest premiums, and draws on Gérald Genta’s 1970s design and Patek’s very limited supply. The whole industry watches its prices.

Aquanaut: modern and lighter

The Aquanaut (refs. 5167 and 5168) appeals to a slightly younger, more adventurous buyer. Its premium is lower than the Nautilus’s, and its modern design, lighter weight and rubber strap make it an excellent daily watch. Because it starts lower, it has more room to grow from here than the Nautilus. The dual-time ref. 5164 is especially wanted for its extra complication.

Patek’s controlled supply

Patek Philippe has not raised production to meet demand. Both lines stay hard to buy new and keep strong pre-owned premiums. For official information, see patek.com.

Which one fits you

If recognition and easy resale matter most, the Nautilus. Its resale market is the most established. Look at the 5811/1G (white gold) or a pristine full-set 5711.

If you want more room to grow, the Aquanaut. The steel Travel Time ref. 5164A is especially strong, as are the larger 5168G models.

Patek is a long-term purchase. No one can promise returns on either watch.

Buying pre-owned

Buying a steel Patek from an authorized dealer is close to impossible, so for most buyers the pre-owned market is the way in. You get the watch right away, you can buy the discontinued 5711, and you can see the actual watch before you pay.

Patek Philippe is heavily counterfeited because of its value. Buy only from a dealer who shows clear provenance and stands behind the watch, and insist on a full set. At Good Times Luxury, every watch is checked before it is listed.
